The raven that stayed in the boat coordinates with Lisa’s character, who was essentially stuck between a rock and a hard place-who more or less went along for the ride but did not move to one extreme (staying in society and forgetting Nine and Twelve vs. The bird that flew back home could represent Twelve’s newfound desire to re-assimilate in society after he met Lisa, how he turned back on Nine and their plan. This mirrors with the goal of Nine and Twelve to carry out their revenge and come to a place of peace-or perhaps find peace in death as they knew their time was running out. To reiterate, the purpose of these ravens were to go to this new, supposedly better land. One bird flew back to his hometown, one remained in the boat, and the other flew off in the direction of Iceland, never to return to the boat. The actions of the birds are also quite telling, and can can relate to the actions of Nine, Twelve, and Lisa. Once again, we have another connection, as the raven birds are an important symbol in this series. Despite losing two daughters, the Floki travels onward, and the legend continues to say that he brought along three ravens with him believing that they would show him the way.
Lisa, who is constantly depicted in the ending as drowning in the ocean, and Five, who ultimately rebels against her American government “father”. Already we see two connections to the characters Lisa and Five. However tragedy struck, and one of his daughters drowned, and the other decided to rebel against her father and not follow him. In fact, the history of Iceland is recorded in what they call the “Sagas” (translated from Icelandic to “story” or “history”), also the name of one of the soundtrack titles.Īccording to Icelandic legend, a man by the name of Floki Vilgeroarson went off from his town in Norway to explore a “new land” further north, bringing along his family. So why Iceland? There could be multiple reasons, but it appears that part of Iceland’s history parallels nicely with Terror In Resonance. However, looking a little bit deeper, there is more of a connection than initially thought. The only other time Iceland is remotely referenced is when Nine’s eyes are described “as cold as ice from a faraway land”. Besides the use of “VON” in the beginning of the series, using it as their mantra per say, there really are not many other references to Iceland present in the actual show (in the soundtrack titles, on the other hand, there are “saga”, “fugl”, “hanna”, “ili” in “ili lolol”, “bless”, and “kvak”.).
Honestly, that is a really interesting question.
